and enjoy a great event in the Alpine Village of Hanmer Springs.


The Hanmer Holiday Homes Alpine Marathon, Half Marathon and 10km, runs from Lake Tennyson, high in the alpine environment of the St James and Molesworth Stations

following the Clarence River along quiet gravel roads, and crossing Jacks Pass before descending to the picturesque village of Hanmer Springs,130km NW of Christchurch.  This is a unique race through beautiful scenery, the preparation and planning of the transfers of competitors is put down to a fine art.  Please ensure you are at The Domain 15 minutes prior to your bus departure.  If you miss your bus there will be no transport available.


Marathon profile – Starts at Lake Tennyson (1087m)  generally downhill as can be seen from profile. Quite a few ups and downs Similar undulations to the Buller Gorge Marathon, if you know that race, but on a gravel surface – not the smoothest. Major climb at 33km for 3km (approximately 70m vertical climb) then quite steep downhill to finish (at 380m). over the last 6km.  All figures are approximate.  This is truely a unique course.   View map HERE 

Due to marshalling constraints we cannot allow walkers in the Marathon.  If contestants are seen to be walking they maybe asked to withdraw from the race by the marshals or tail end charlie.

This race is organised by Amazing Days - Events on behalf of The Communicty Trust and is run as a Community Fundraiser.

The buses are not run by Hanmer Events.  Please note if you are entering with a winning certificate you will still need to pay for your bus.

Alterations: Any changes that require a refund will incur a $10 admin fee.


Entry on the day: If the races are not full there will be a $20.00 late entry fee on the day.  Please continue to look at the website for updates.  Register early to avoid the late entry fee. 


Walkers are welcome in the Race One for the half marathon, and the 10km race.  You must walk competitively.  WALKERS MUST WALK this does not mean run or jog.  If you are seen to run or jog you will be disqualified from the race.    Due to marshalling contraints if you are not walking competitively or have not completed the course within an acceptable time the marshals will ask you to withdraw.

Walkers must keep to the left to allow runners to pass and must not block the course.  

There will be a separate category for these competitors in Race One of the half marathon, and the 10k category. There will be one overall male and female prize in the walking half marathon and 10km there are no prices for age categories for walkers. 


Registration: will be at Monteiths Brewery Bar on Amuri Ave from 6.30pm to 8.30pm on Friday 1st December December or the The Pavilion/Domain from 6.30am-8.15am on Saturday.  For Race One Half Marathon and the Marathon please register on Friday night.


NB: If you register it will be assumed you will start the race. This is an important safety issue. Please do not register and then not start the race.


Indemnity Forms:  Must be accepted online. for Junior's these must be completed at registration prior to the race by a parent or legal guardian.  For manual entries the indemnity form must be signed prior to the race at registration or received with your payment.


Shuttles to Start: The shuttle service will operate from The Domain in Hanmer Springs.   The cost for the Shuttle bus is included in your entry fee. We ask that competitors

DO NOT arrange your own shuttles or transport, nor have support vehicles on the course.


Due to transportation and restraints on competitors numbers in each events please be sure to enter the correct race.

Race brief: will take place the Start Line of each race 15 minutes before Start Time. All competitors must be present at this.


Start time: for the Marathon will be at 7.35am the Race One Half Marathon will be at 8.00am,  Race Two Half Marathon will be 9.45am and the 10km will be at 11.15am


Prizegiving: at finish area at the Hanmer Springs Sports Pavilion /Domain at 1.30pm or when the last competitor has crossed the finish line and the timekeeper is ready  Prizes for walkers, there will be one overall male and female for the half marathon and 10km walk.  There will be no prizes for individual age category for walkers.   

There will be spot prizes.  You must be at prize giving to receive your winning certificates or spot prizes.  Prizes will not be posted out.
